get ready to gasp in disbelief.
i've never been to montreal.
the good news: i'm going for 4 days next week! c'est bien! we're staying downtown (crescent & st. catharine), so the location is pretty central. any tips on things i should/shouldn't/absolutely must see while there?
oh, i like shopping, so tips on where to buy clothes would be most welcome.

Time to return your travel tip favour!
To be blunt, flat out avoid the area that you're staying in. Crescent St. is RAD if you like barfy frat boys and Juicy Couture girls with fake tans (I'm willing to bet that you don't). Ste. Catherine is mostly overrated - you can find most of those stores in just about any mall anywhere. The only shopping truly worth checking out in that area is Simon's on Ste. Catherine - cute clothes for super cheapness!
Also be sure to check out:
-Old Montreal (by the water)
Chinatown (just north of Old Montreal)
My beloved former hood, the Plateau (just north of Chinatown).
Good browsing streets include St. Laurent, St. Denis and Mont Royal (all on the Plateau). There are the best record and clothing stores on and around those particular streets.
Don't forget to stock up on Montreal bagels from Mile End (area just north of the Plateau). St. Viateur was my favourite for those.
And oh - crazy hippie patchouli'ddd Burning Man shit happens on Sundays at the base of the mountain, if you're into that sort of thing.
